49th Annual Food Drive Set For Nov. 5 And 6

49th Annual Food Drive Set For Nov. 5 And 6

Cheshire Food Drive, Inc. will hold its 49th annual town-wide Food Drive on Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 5 and 6, on the green in front of First Congregational Church, 111 Church Dr.

The lingering effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and increases in fuel and food costs continue to create food insecurity in America, and here in Cheshire. Neighbors need help.

Organizers welcome volunteers of all ages on the Church green during the Cheshire Food Drive to collect and sort food donations for area food pantries. Join them at any time between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. on both days and stay for as long or as little as you like. This is an easy way to earn community service hours or maybe even start a family tradition.

Organizers also encourage individuals to organize a business or neighborhood food drive. Contact the Cheshire Food Drive before Monday, Oct. 31, at info@CheshireFoodDrive.org for information, flyers, and collection bins. These smaller drives help to draw the town together.

Financial support enables the Food Drive to continue to fund the Town’s Food Voucher Program. A partnership between the nonprofit Cheshire Food Drive, Inc. and the Town of Cheshire’s Human Services Department, the Food Voucher Program provides food assistance, independent of any food pantry, to Cheshire residents on an emergency basis with no paperwork, or monthly for those who meet the economic criteria. Individuals use these $40 Food Vouchers — $60 for a family of four or more — to purchase their choice of food or personal care items at Stop & Shop or Big Y.

Thanks to a recent bequest from a longtime Cheshire resident, the Drive now also offers $20 supplemental Food Vouchers.

Cheshire Food Drive, Inc. directly reimburses the grocery stores for the cost of the Food Vouchers. The group has honored more than 1,750 requests for Food Vouchers since 2020 (nearly $75,000 in food assistance). If you or someone you know could benefit from a Food Voucher, please contact Cheshire’s Human Services Department.

Cheshire Food Drive, Inc. has supported neighbors for nearly 50 years thanks to the community’s tremendous support.
