Cheshire Food Drive Looking To Stock The Shelves Once Again

Cheshire Food Drive Looking To Stock The Shelves Once Again

Cheshire Food Drive, Inc. held its first town-wide food drive in the early1970s and began funding the town’s Food Voucher Program in the 1980s. Today, Cheshire Food Drive, Inc. will hold its 46th annual town-wide food drive on Saturday, Nov. 2, and Sunday, Nov. 3. The event remains the sole source of funding for the Food Voucher Program.

Cheshire Human Services distributes about 50 $40 and $60 food vouchers, depending on family size, to Cheshire residents each month. These food vouchers can also be requested on an emergency basis with no paperwork involved. These vouchers, honored at Cheshire’s Stop & Shop and Big Y, allow users the freedom to purchase the food items of their choice. Cheshire Food Drive, Inc. reimburses the stores directly for more than 600 vouchers each year thanks to generous contributions from town residents and local businesses.

The Food Voucher Program runs independently from any food pantry. Support this worthy program by check sent to PO Box 926, Cheshire, CT 06410, or by visiting the group’s website, www.CheshireFoodDrive.org.

The event will run from from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and will be held on the green in front of First Congregational Church, 111 Church Dr. This is an opportunity for the entire town to come together in “helping to feed our neighbors.”

Those interested can donate food or money at the green or in front of Stop & Shop over the weekend, or food through the public schools in the weeks before the drive. Locally sponsored reusable grocery bags will be available for donations of $5 or more. Volunteers of all ages are welcome help on the green to check expiration dates, sort, and box the donated items, which we’ll then deliver to local food pantries.
