Kirby Named Luminary Award Winner For 2021

Cheshire’s Lights of Hope has announced the winner of its 2021 Luminary Award. The Award is presented annually for exceptional commitment to the Cheshire community, which embodies the Cheshire’s Lights of Hope motto of “Neighbors Helping Neighbors.”

Kathy Kirby, an active member of the Cheshire’s Lights of Hope Executive Committee since 2014 and a board member since 2020, was presented with the Cheshire’s Lights of Hope Luminary Award in recognition of her generosity, acts of kindness, good citizenship, and volunteerism.

Kirby has an extensive history of volunteering in Cheshire, working with the following groups:

•Cheshire Public Schools and the town wide PTA/PTOs, receiving the Pillar of Cheshire Schools Award.

•The Girl Scouts Volunteer and Troop Co-Leader, Hartford Catholic Scouting Committee.

•Cheshire YMCA, receiving The Unsung Hero Award in 2010.

•Cheshire Relay For Life, the Cheshire Half Marathon 5K Foundation, Friends of the Cheshire Public Library.

•St. Thomas Becket Church and St. Bridget of Sweden Parish volunteer.

•Cheshire’s Lights of Hope Street Captain, Chairperson for Sponsorship and Awards Committees, Board Member.

Part of the Luminary Award is a gift of $1,000 to the charity of the recipient’s choice. Kirby chose to give hers to the Cheshire Community Food Pantry.

“Kathy is always the first person to step up when there is a need for volunteers in our town. We are so grateful to have her as a member of our organization, as I am sure the many other groups she volunteers for are,” added Don Walsh.

Cheshire’s Lights of Hope raises funds through sales of luminary kits. The luminaries are simultaneously lit by schools, churches, local businesses, and residents throughout the town. The proceeds raised are donated in the spirit of the organization’s “Neighbors Helping Neighbors” mission.

This year’s luminary event has been scheduled to be held on Nov. 12.
