Checking More Restaurants Off The Summer Bucket List


The last weeks of summer are upon us, and it’s time to crack down on the season’s bucket list adventures. Here are four spots in Southern Connecticut that should be visited before the summer comes to an end.

Olives and Oil, Seymour

This place has been on my list for a while and it did not disappoint. If you want a little taste of everything, have everyone in your party order off the Prix Fixe menu. On this menu, you are able to choose a salad, an appetizer, and an entree for $22. Add a glass of wine to the mix for an additional $3. This dinner special is offered Wednesday to Saturday from 3 to 5:30 p.m. and on Sunday from 3 p.m. to close.

The arancini ball (pictured above) is life-changing. Real tears were shed in the tasting of the vodka sauce. Its crispy outside beautifully contrasts with the gooeyness of the inside and is like a warm hug in your stomach when mixed together with the vodka sauce. The Cacio e Pepe, Rigatoni a la Vodka and Chicken Parm were also delicious options. The portions are so generous for each course that there is plenty to share. GG’s Wood Fired Pizza, Milford

When it comes to crispy and delicious specialty pizzas, GG’s is the place to try. For a while now, my go-to topping is ricotta — the cheesier the better. When I saw the Vodka Pizza (above right) description at GG’s, I knew that’s what I needed to get. It is smothered in vodka sauce, ricotta, pancetta, and basil. If you’ve never had vodka sauce on a pizza, this is the place to try it.

We also ordered three other pies: the Margherita, the Eggplant Bianca — a white pie with pesto, eggplant, ricotta, fontina, and fresh mozzarella — and the Prosciutto — 24-month aged prosciutto, fire-roasted tomatoes, a three-cheese blend and topped with an arugula salad. Eggs & Co., Newtown

We always pass this spot on the way to New York and have been wanting to try it for some time now. The Greek Avocado Egg Sandwich (pictured left) sounded so different from a traditional bacon, egg and cheese that I had to try it. The Greek consisted of avocado, egg, feta, cooked spinach, and kalamata olives. I love Greek food, but was interested to see how those kinds of flavors would go with the egg.

It definitely ranks as one of the best breakfast sandwiches I’ve ever had. These flavors, all on a toasted sesame seed bagel, blended so well together that I considered ordering another one when I was finished. Eggs & Co. also offers delicious café and coffee-style beverages, including a Frozen Hot Chocolate that I definitely recommend. Eggs & Co., 71 South Main St., Newtown, CT 06470

Firehouse Deli, Fairfield

Fairfield is such a great place for a day trip. In this area, you will find so many cute shops to try, a gazebo and seating to enjoy the day, quick bites, ice cream shops, restaurants, and more. According to its Instagram, Firehouse Deli was, “Established in 1969 as ‘The Original Firehouse’ but to most of Fairfield County we are known as ‘The Best Deli and Salad Bar!’” Firehouse Deli offers a variety of sandwiches, salads, paninis, and more. There are tables available right outside of the deli and down this cute alleyway to the right of the building. It’s definitely a local favorite; we sat outside as so many people came in and out of the big red door.

Portions are on the smaller side, but the food is very tasty. I ordered the Fairfield U Chicken Panini (above), which had grilled chicken, avocado, bacon, pepper jack cheese, and chipotle mayo. Inside the deli, you can help yourself to as many pickles as you want. On the counter sits a giant pot of sliced pickles with tongs and little cups to put them in.
