Senior Center Programs

The Cheshire Senior Center, 240 Maple Ave., is open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. For more information, call the Administrative Office at (203) 272-8286. Transportation is available upon request by calling (203) 272-0047.

The Savvy Caregiver” Training Program – Thursdays, from 5 to 7 p.m. Starts tonight and continues on Sept. 19, Oct. 3, Oct. 10, Oct. 17 and Oct. 24. This six-week training program is for anyone who cares for someone with Alzheimer’s or related dementias. Open to the public, but registration is required by calling (203) 272-8286.

Healthy Brain Series – Mondays, at 10:30 a.m. Sept. 9: Maintaining good nutrition for optimal brain health. Sept. 16: Importance of mental and physical exercise and sleep for optimum brain health. Sept. 23: Managing stress and learning the benefit of being social and having a purpose for a healthy brain.

Hospitality Committee Meeting – Tuesday, Sept. 10, at 10:30 a.m. If you are looking for an activity to get involved in at the Cheshire Senior Center, consider becoming a Hospitality Volunteer. This is a perfect way to keep busy, meet new people and get involved. The Hospitality Committee is responsible for helping out at social events and programs throughout the year where refreshments, including meals, are offered. Volunteers choose when they would like to help — no ongoing commitment is required.

Cheshire Cuisine Club – Wednesday, Sept. 11, at noon. This month’s featured restaurant is Toro Brazilian Steakhouse in New Haven. Transportation is available upon request (limited to 12 passengers). Register with Laura no later than tomorrow, Sept. 6.

Introduction to Handwriting Analysis – Friday, Sept. 13, at 10:30 a.m. Certified Graphoanalyst Patricia Senich will talk about the intriguing world of handwriting analysis. Registration is required by Tuesday, Sept. 10.

AARP Safe Driving Course – Monday, Sept. 16, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Cost is $15 for AARP members, $20 for non-AARP members. Pre-registration with payment by check or money order only, payable to AARP, is required.

Photo ID – Monday, Sept. 16, from 1 to 3 p.m. Photos are taken on a first-come, first-served basis.

Veterans’ Coffee House – Tuesday, Sept. 17, from 10 to 11:30 a.m. This month’s featured speaker, Claude Campbell, U.S. Army and Senator Chris Murphy’s Veterans’ Affairs staff member, will talk about his experience in the U.S. Army. Registration is appreciated. Call (203) 272-8286.

Cheshire Readers Book Club – Tuesday, Sept. 17, from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Please read “The Grapes of Wrath” by JohnSteinbeck for discussion this month.

The Big “E” Connecticut Day – Wednesday, Sept. 18. Travel with Getaway Tours. Registration is required by Monday, Sept. 9. Fee: $55, includes transportation, admission to The Big “E” and driver’s gratuity. Payment by check only, payable to Getaway Tours. Trip is rain or shine. See Laura for more information.

Tech Thursday – Thursday, Sept. 19, from 10 a.m. to noon. A Cheshire Library staff member will provide one-on-one assistance with tech devices. No appointment required — first-come, first-served.

Medicare 101 Bingo – Wednesday, Sept. 25, from 1 to 2 p.m. Learn the basics of Medicare before the October 2019 open enrollment period starts. Presented by Jessalyn Pito, Medicare agent. Registration is required by Monday, Sept. 23.

Trip Presentation: Alaska Discovery Land and Cruise – Wednesday, Sept. 25, at 1 p.m. Tracy O’Neill from Collette Travel will give an informative presentation highlighting the many places of interest to be visited, review the itinerary and answer questions. Registration is appreciated.

Healthy Backs – Thursday, Sept. 26, from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Millions of people suffer from back pain, the leading cause of disability in the United States. Learn how to alleviate pain, build strength and stability, and prevent back injuries through physical therapy before surgery. Learn models for healing, protecting and strengthening your back.
