Senior Center Programs


Per COVID guidelines set by the State of Connecticut, all indoor programs at the Cheshire Senior Center, 240 Maple Ave., have been canceled until further notice.

 

Ongoing Series: Reflections Café – Mondays, April 5 and April 19, from 5 to 6 p.m. Reflections Café is a virtual social gathering place for persons with memory loss, mild cognitive impairment, early Alzheimer’s or other dementia along with their family and friends to share an hour of exploring positive topics such as cooking, art, music, poetry, movies, show & tell, and more. The group, led by Andrea Sidoruk, MSW intern, meets twice per month to make new friends and share stories, including any feelings about the challenges of living with memory loss, mild cognitive impairment, early Alzheimer’s or other dementia, from the comfort and safety of home or comfortable place. New Program! Mindful Functional Movement for Activities of Daily Living – Mondays, through May 17, from 1 to 1:45 p.m. Mindful functional movement sequencing is tailored to performing the activities of daily living and helping older individuals maintain their independence. This exercise class includes focused sequences and movements with breath components to strengthen muscles, improve endurance, and body awareness in performing everyday tasks. Sequences include getting up from the floor, mindful walking, balancing, and mindful breathing. Participants will be asked to complete a pre-activity survey and a final evaluation upon completion, which will be reviewed by the mindful movement instructor. This free 16-week program is being led by Ophelia Empleo-Frazier, MSN, GNP-BC, BSN, CDP. Lawn Games with Laura – Tuesdays, April 6, and April 20, at 1:30 p.m. Spring is here! Join friends (weather permitting) on the Senior Center’s front lawn for various games. Registration and masks are required. To register, call (203) 272-8286 or email lgravel@cheshirect.org .

Zoom Bingo with Sahal – Tuesdays, April 13 and April 27, at 1 p.m. Join via Zoom for a fun afternoon of Bingo. Prizes will be mailed out to winners at the end of the month. For registration and Bingo card pickup, call (203) 272-8286 or email lgravel@cheshirect.org.

Healthcare Decision Panel Discussion – Wednesday, April 14, at 1 p.m., via Zoom. April is Healthcare Decisions Month. Representatives from Masonicare will discuss the importance of making your end-of-life choices known. This is not an easy topic to discuss, but it is an important one. Sit Down Online with Stefanie – Thursday, April 15, at 10:30 a.m. During this “informal” online Zoom meeting, Stefanie hopes to answer any questions that participants may have regarding the Senior Center. Call (203) 272-8286 or email lgravel@cheshirect.org to register.

The Cheshire Sherlock Holmes Society – Thursday, April 15, at 1 p.m. Please read “The Adventure of the Veiled Lodger” by Arthur Conan Doyle for discussion via Zoom. Contact Andy Tranquilli at tranquilli@hotmail.com to attend. New members and guests are always welcome.

Driven to Distraction – Thursday, April 15, at 1:30 p.m., via Zoom. Presented by Fran Mayko from AAA Northeast. This presentation will help drivers understand the risks of distractions and the ways to avoid them. Drivers will learn about cognitive, manual and physical distractions. “Hawaiian Adventure” Presentation – Tuesday, May 4. Are you ready to start traveling again? Join fellow travel enthusiasts, in person or via Zoom, for a special travel presentation by Tracy O’Neill from Collette Travel on the Senior Center’s exciting “Hawaiian Adventure” Learn trip scheduled for October. Updated Transportation Services Information

Please look for storm closings and delays on the Cheshire Senior Center Facebook page and local news channels. Typically, if school is delayed, Senior Center buses are delayed and if school is closed, Senior Center buses do not run.

With Covid-19 precautions in place, transportation is available for:

•Medical appointments in service area

•Grocery shopping

•Pharmacy

•Personal appointments based on availability

Call Eileen in the Transportation Office at (203) 272-0047 for information and reservations.

Ride requests are accepted two weeks in advance. Any request made after 11 a.m. on the day before a ride is needed is subject to availability.

Ride requests are accepted for out-of-town medical appointments scheduled between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. on the following days:

Monday – Meriden

Tuesday – North Haven and Hamden

Wednesday – Wallingford

Thursday – New Haven

Friday – Southington 

NOTE: Beginning today, April 1, bus drivers will accept cash donations as riders step on the bus. Pricing is 50 cents each way for in-town rides and $5 round trip for out-of-town appointments.

Dial-A-Ride is available on Fridays for the Waterbury area.
