Senior Programs


The Cheshire Senior Center, 240 Maple Ave., is actively developing plans to reopen and outdoor programming has begun. Proper mask-wearing, social distancing, and sanitizing are required of all participants.

Rebuilding a volunteer base is an important part of the reopening plan. Volunteers are needed at the front desk, in the library, to help with the newsletter or call Bingo games. Please contact the Senior Center at (203) 272-8286 between 8:30 a.m. and 4 p.m., Monday through Friday, if you are interested.

 

Ongoing Series

Mindful Functional Movement for Activities of Daily Living – Mondays, through May 17, from 1 to 1:45 p.m. Mindful functional movement sequencing is tailored to performing the activities of daily living and helping older individuals maintain their independence. This exercise class includes focused sequences and movements with breath components to strengthen muscles, improve endurance, and body awareness in performing everyday tasks. Sequences include getting up from the floor, mindful walking, balancing, and mindful breathing. Participants will be asked to complete a pre-activity survey and a final evaluation upon completion, which will be reviewed by the mindful movement instructor. This free 16-week program is being led by Ophelia Empleo-Frazier, MSN, GNP-BC, BSN, CDP. “Hawaiian Adventure” Trip Presentation – Tuesday, May 4. Are you ready to start traveling again? Join fellow travel enthusiasts, in person or via Zoom, for a special travel presentation by Tracy O’Neill from Collette Travel on the Senior Center’s exciting “Hawaiian Adventure” Learn trip scheduled for October. Zoom Bingo with Sahal – Tuesdays, May 11 and May 25, at 1 p.m. Join via Zoom for a fun afternoon of Bingo. Prizes will be mailed to winners at the end of the month. For registration and Bingo card pickup, call (203) 272-8286 or email lgravel@cheshirect.org.

Seniors 4 Seniors Intergenerational Book Club – Thursday, May 13, at 6 p.m. Join via Zoom to discuss “The Lions of Fifth Avenue” by Fiona Davis. To register, call (203) 272-8286 or email lgravel@cheshirect.org.

Trickster Cards – Fridays, May 14, May 21, and May 28, at 1 p.m. Play card games virtually. Instruction will be provided, as well as iPads, or bring your own device. Space is limited and registration is required. Reserve a spot by calling (203) 272-8286 or emailing lgravel@cheshirect.org.

Caregiver Burn-Out – Wednesday, May 19, from 6:15 to 7:15 p.m., in person and via Zoom.

Outdoor Concert with The Boogie Boys – Thursday, May 27, from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Celebrate Older Americans month with an outdoor concert on the front lawn of the Senior Center, 240 Maple Ave. Face masks will be required. Save The Dates! 

Jump into June: Join the Chesprocott Health District’s Lifestyle Change Program – begins on Thursday, June 10. This year-long program will be held weekly on Thursdays for six months, then monthly for the following six months. Goals are to: 

•increase your quality of life

•increase physical activity, and 

•lose 5-7% of your body weight

Updated Transportation Services Information

With COVID-19 precautions in place, transportation is available for:

•Medical appointments in service area

•Grocery shopping

•Pharmacy

•Personal appointments based on availability

Call Eileen in the Transportation Office at (203) 272-0047 for information and reservations.

Ride requests are accepted two weeks in advance. Any request made after 11 a.m. on the day before a ride is needed is subject to availability.

Ride requests are accepted for out-of-town medical appointments scheduled between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. on the following days:

Monday – Meriden

Tuesday – North Haven and Hamden

Wednesday – Wallingford

Thursday – New Haven

Friday – Southington 

NOTE: Bus drivers now accept cash donations as riders step on the bus. Pricing is 50 cents each way for in-town rides and $5 round trip for out-of-town appointments.

Dial-A-Ride is available on Fridays for the Waterbury area.
