Senior Center Programs


Welcome Back!

The Cheshire Senior Center, 240 Maple Ave., is happy to announce that the building partially opened to the public on May 3. Members can now access the building Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Staff continues to be available by phone and email Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. The phone number is (203) 272-8286; fax is (203) 272-6296.Anyone who plans on visiting should read and familiarize themselves with re-opening rules and guidelines. It is important that these rules and guidelines are always followed to ensure everyone’s safety.

General Safety Guidelines

• Members will always wear masks while visiting CSC. Anyone choosing not to wear a mask will be asked to leave.

• Practice social distancing of 6 feet or more at all times.

• Everyone entering the building will be asked to sign in. Temperatures will be taken and recorded upon visitor’s entrance to the building. Anyone with an elevated temperature will be asked to leave.

Schedule

The Senior Center is open to members from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. This abbreviated schedule will allow the staff to organize and sanitize at the beginning and end of each day.

The second floor of the building, dining room, and kitchen are currently closed to visitors. Please observe posted signs.

Use of the rooms (library, billiards, etc.) will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. In fairness to all members, time limits may be imposed.

Facilities

Hand sanitizer and wipes are readily available. Please notify the staff if any are needed.

Furniture placement in each room is distanced appropriately. Please keep extra chairs stacked.

High contact areas are disinfected regularly and, at minimum, every two hours. Please help us with this process by cleaning your immediate space prior to leaving it.

Office Management

• Pre-registration is required for all programs and services.

• One person is allowed in the office at a time. The waiting area is the hallway outside of the main office. Office doors will remain closed. Please knock before entering.

Programs

All programs are evaluated regularly to determine if they can

1. Resume meeting in-person with capacity limitations,

2. Continue in a digital/remote format, or

3. Remain on-hold for the time being, until restrictions are lifted.

Live, in-person programs and classes will have a limited capacity and will only be available to active Senior Center members. The cost of classes is the same for both in-person and virtual.

Social Services

Appointments are scheduled with Kristen, (203) 272-8030, for one-on-one meetings, socially distanced and masked.

Support groups and Reflections Café will remain online.

Transportation

Transportation will continue to run as it has throughout the pandemic. Masks are required to ride and there is a maximum of 4 passengers on the van. The maximum number of passengers is reevaluated regularly. All van passengers will continue to go through the COVID screening questionnaire at the time of the reservation and at the time of the ride confirmation. Disinfection procedures of the vans will continue as it has throughout the pandemic.

Senior Nutrition

Grab & Go Meals are available for pick up on Tuesdays and Fridays between 11 a.m. and 11:30 a.m.

Registration deadline for meals is the Friday prior to distribution.

Grab & Go Meals are coordinated by Eileen, (203) 272-0047. Senior Center vans will continue to assist with Food Pantry distribution.

No food, beverages, or in-person dining are allowed in the Senior Center.

Volunteers

Volunteer receptionists will notify Stefanie and/or Tracey, preferably by email, if there are any changes to the volunteer schedule. This will allow for substitute coverage to be arranged.

Library volunteers will notify Stefanie and/or Tracey, preferably by email, if there are any changes to their schedules.

Bingo volunteers will be coordinated by Laura.

Newsletter volunteers will be coordinated monthly by Tracey.

Other volunteering will be limited, until restrictions are lifted.

New Series with the Chesprocott Health District: Lifestyle Change Program

A new Lifestyle Change Program will be held via Zoom on Thursdays beginning June 10 at 10 a.m. and will eventually transition to in-person at the Cheshire Senior Center.

The program runs for 1 year. During the first 6 months of the program, participants will meet once a week virtually, and/or in person when safe to do so. During the second 6 months, participants will meet once a month.

Program Goals

•Increase your quality of life

•Increase physical activity

•Lose 5-7% of your body weight

Program Eligibility

Participants must

•Be able to commit to the full program

•Be concerned about their current nutrition and physical activity

•Have NOT been diagnosed with type 1 or type 2 diabetes 

•Have received a result of high risk for type 2 diabetes on the Prediabetes Risk Test.

•Have had a recent blood test in the prediabetes range

June Events with the Cheshire Senior Center

Save The Date! Registration for Summer Classes begins on Tuesday, June 22, at 9 a.m. Summer Classes begin the week of July 12, in person and via Zoom.

Trickster Cards – Fridays, June 4, June 11, and June 18, at 1 p.m. Play the card games you love with friends and family or get matched with other live players at your level. Trickster Cards offers customizable rules so you can play cards your way! It’s fast-paced, competitive, fun — and FREE! Trickster is available to play on tablets, laptops and computers; iPads and instruction will be provided or bring your own device. Space is limited and registration is required. Cheshire Readers Book Club – Tuesday, June 15, at 10:45 a.m. Group will meet outdoors, weather permitting, otherwise via Zoom. Book choice for this month is “The Masterpiece” by Fiona Davis. Call (203) 272-8286 or email lgravel@cheshirect.org to register.

Father’s Day Dash and Dine Lunch – Monday, June 21, starting at 11 a.m. A special drive-thru event to celebrate Father’s Day. Lunch menu will be Barbeque Chicken with other goodies.  This event is open to all members and is sponsored by Whitney Rehabilitation Care Center & New England Young At Heart. Outdoor Lawn Bingo – Tuesday, June 29, at 1:30 p.m. (weather permitting). Enjoy an afternoon of live Bingo on the Senior Center front lawn. Registration is required. Weekly Trail Walks – Join local seniors for a walk on the Farmington Canal Heritage Trail in Cheshire or the Quinnipiac Trail in South Meriden. Walking is a wonderful way for older adults to stay physically and mentally active. For more information, call Marge at (203) 272-3316.

Elderly Nutrition
Program at the Cheshire Senior Center

The Cheshire Senior Center with New Opportunities is once again providing meals as an Elderly Nutrition Meal Site. “Grab and Go” lunches are available for pick up at the Senior Center every Tuesday and Friday from 11 to 11:30 a.m. for a suggested donation of $3 per meal. This program is available to all Cheshire residents ages 60 and over.

Orders can be placed through the Dispatch Office at (203) 272-0047 by Friday for the following week’s lunches.

This is a “Grab and Go” service similar to a drive-thru. If you do not drive and would like to participate in the program, a Senior Center van can transport you to pick up your meal. This arrangement must be made when you place your meal order. Meals cannot be delivered. 

A limited number of meals are available each week; meal reservations are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis.

Grab and Go meals cannot be eaten at the Senior Center.

Transportation Services

With Covid-19 precautions in place, transportation is available for:

∙Grocery shopping

∙Pharmacy

∙Personal appointments based on availability

Ride requests are accepted two weeks in advance. Any request made after 11 a.m. the day before a ride is needed is subject to availability.

Ride requests are accepted for appointments scheduled between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. on the days listed above.

Bus drivers now accept cash donations as you step on the bus. Pricing is 50 cents each way for in-town rides and $5 round trip for out-of-town appointments.

Dial-A-Ride is available on Fridays for the Waterbury area.
