Officials said a suspicious package that was left behind in the parking lot of the South Main Street CVS store did not actually pose a threat to the public.
The item, later identified as an environmental testing device, was discovered outside the store, at 905 South Main St. shortly before 7 p.m. Police and firefighters responded to the scene and evacuated the area as a precaution. The Connecticut State Police’s Emergency Service Unit was also called to the scene as a precaution, according to a statement from Cheshire police.
After investigators identified the item as a testing device the area was reopened to the public.
“The Cheshire Police would like to thank the public for their vigilance in this matter and for helping keep our community safe,” the statement said.
