CHESHIRE – Martha (Somers) Henderson, 76, passed away on Thursday, December 31, 2020, at St. Mary’s Hospital, with her children by her side. She was the widow of Douglas M. Henderson and celebrated 40 wonderful years of marriage just prior to his death in 2006.
Martha was born on December 12, 1944, in Greenwich, the daughter of the late Charles E. and Ruth (Biederman) Somers. She was sister to the late Charles H. and James Somers and to his surviving spouse Judith Somers of Aiken, S.C.
She graduated St. Margaret’s School in Waterbury and went on to achieve her Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education from Wheelock College and a Master’s degree from Southern Connecticut State University. She grew up in Watertown and was an educator of 27 years for their school system until her retirement in 1998. She was a longtime member of the Junior League of Greater Waterbury, an adjunct professor at Naugatuck Valley Community College, and an active member of the Cheshire Lutheran Church. At the time of her death, she was still teaching at their Little Cherubs Preschool. She loved teaching and spending time with the children. She also enjoyed many years playing in their bell choir. Martha enjoyed reading, crafts, gardening and time with family.
Martha is survived by her sons, Scott of Vero Beach, Fla., Craig and his wife Rachel of Cheshire, and her beloved grandchildren Douglas and Derek. She was a lover of all animals and the cats, dogs, birds, deer, foxes and squirrels will miss her generous nature. Rest in peace mom, we love you.
