On Friday, Cheshire High School boys’ basketball (1-4) dropped a tight game, 38-36, to Xavier (5-1). In a defensive struggle, the Falcons led 14-13 at the close of the first quarter and took a 17-15 halftime lead.
Cheshire outscored Xavier, 11-5, in the third quarter, but the Falcons rallied in the fourth to pick up the road victory. For CHS, junior Cole Feinauer scored a career-high 20 points, 14 coming in the second half.
Senior tri-captain Alec Frione tallied eight points, sinking a pair of three-pointers. Fellow senior tri-captains Colby Griffin (six) and Shaan Vatti (two) combined for eight points.
While facing a three-game slide, the Rams have come up short by just a combined 10 points.
The Rams look to bounce back on Monday, visiting North Haven (5-2) to play at 7 p.m. Both teams will enter with 0-1 records in the Oronoque Division.
Girls’ Basketball (2-5, 0-1 in Quinnipiac Division)
Cheshire dropped their fourth straight game, falling 45-20 to rival Shelton (7-1). The Gaelettes raced out to a 6-0 advantage and led 12-2 at the end of the first quarter. In setting up a zone defense, Shelton utilized their length to alter CHS shots and then score in transition to build a 22-9 advantage at halftime.
Cheshire finished the game on a 6-0 run that consisted of two baskets by junior Ella Watson and the first varsity points from junior Hailey Beling. Coming off the bench, Watson scored a personal-high six points to lead CHS.
Senior Emma Watkinson scored four points and junior Kaylee Clark made a three-pointer in the second quarter. Junior Sophie Vagts and sophomore Tess Givens both netted baskets to join Beling with two points. Givens went down with an injury, but returned to the court.
Sophomore Grace Lurz hit a free throw in the fourth quarter. Senior Rylee Post battled inside against a tall Shelton front court.
For Shelton, senior Leya Vohra scored a game-high 15 points.
For a division game on Monday, Cheshire hosts Daniel Hand (6-2, 1-0) at 5:15 p.m.
Saturday’s varsity slate:
After a nine-day break, the Rams return to wrestle in the Casey Yates Invitaitonal at Lyman Memorial. Start time is 9 a.m.
Girls’ Ice Hockey (6-2-1)
In a game between teams that share the same home ice, Amity/North Haven/Cheshire Co-Op faces Hamden/Wilbur Cross/Lyman Hall Co-Op (2-6) at Louis Astorino Ice Arena in Hamden. The contest will begin at 4:30 p.m.
On Dec. 16 of last year, the Connecticut Blades held off their rival by a score of 3-2.
Boys’ Ice Hockey (4-3)
After being shut out in their previous two games on the road, the Rams look to snap their slide in hosting East Catholic (3-4) at Wesleyan University. Start time is 8:15 p.m.
