On Wednesday in Madison, Cheshire High School girls’ basketball (3-13, 1-5 in Quinnipiac Division) fell 63-41 at Daniel Hand (14-3, 6-0). The Tigers outscored the Rams 18-7 in the second quarter to build a 37-20 halftime lead and went on to sweep the regular-season series.
For CHS, sophomore Grace Lurz scored seven of her team-high 11 points in the second half. She joined senior Emma Watkinson, senior co-captain Toni Wetmore, and sophomore Tess Givens with three-pointers.
Watkinson and junior Kaylee Clark both finished with nine points. Givens scored all of her five points in the opening quarter.
Junior Jordan DeMatteo joined Wetmore with three points and senior co-captain Ari Perlini made a free throw in the fourth quarter.
Cheshire looks to snap a seven-game slide on Friday, returning home to play Lauralton Hall (0-17, 0-5) in division action at 6 p.m. On Jan. 15, CHS earned a 49-32 victory in Milford.
Boys’ Basketball (1-13, 0-4 in Oronoque Division)
Cheshire lost 65-41 at Weaver (5-8) in Hartford. Weaver took control early, taking a 14-2 lead in the first quarter.
Junior Cole Feinauer led Cheshire with eight points, six of which came in the first half. Junior Yasha Laskin compiled a personal-best seven points and senior Jackson Cohen scored his first six varsity points in the fourth quarter.
Senior tri-captain Shaan Vatti and sophomore Ben Wable contributed five points, both sinking three-pointers. Senior Dylan Fohl supplied three points.
Senior tri-captain Colby Griffin and seniors Jack Hickey and Jason Shumilla all picked up two points. Junior Sincere Myers chipped in a foul shot in the fourth.
In division action on Friday, the Rams aim to end a 12-game skid in hosting West Haven (9-5, 3-1) at 7 p.m. The Blue Devils beat Cheshire, 60-56, on Jan. 7.
The rematch will represent Cheshire's Eighth Coaches vs. Cancer Game. During the freshmen (3:45 p.m.), junior varsity (5:15 p.m.), and varsity contests, the Rams will raise funds and awareness for the American Cancer Society.
The basketball team and cheerleading squad are both selling pink shirts, as well as donation cards. For the cards, people can put down their name or the name of an individual impacted by cancer. The cards will be put on the walls of the West Gym.
