CHS Basketball Teams Fall In Friday’s Divisional Action

On Friday, Cheshire High School boys’ basketball (1-11, 0-4 in Oronoque Division) came up short in a 70-40 loss to Hamden (8-5, 4-0). The Green Dragons jumped out to a 12-2 lead and held a 23-9 advantage at the end of the first quarter. 

The Rams faced a tough break when senior tri-captain/point guard Alec Frione went down with an ankle injury in the first quarter. Hamden used full-court pressure to force turnovers and capitalized with transition baskets.

In battling against an athletic front line, junior Cole Feinauer led Cheshire with 14 points. Sophomore Ben Wable posted seven of his nine points, including a three-pointer, after the halftime break. Senior tri-captains Colby Griffin and Shaan Vatti both hit three-pointers and finished with five points apiece.

Senior Dylan Fohl tallied a three-point play in the first quarter. Senior Jason Shumilla and junior Yasha Laskin added layups in the third quarter.

For Hamden, senior Heston Tucker compiled 10 of his game-high 24 points in the third quarter.

On Monday, the Rams look to snap a 10-game slide when visiting Middletown to face Xavier (9-3) at 7 p.m. The Falcons pulled out a 38-36 road win on Jan. 10.

Girls’ Basketball (3-11, 1-4 in Quinnipiac Division)

Cheshire fell 51-39 at Wilbur Cross (10-5, 4-1) in New Haven. Cheshire enjoyed a fast start, building a 17-6 lead in the first quarter.

CHS led 26-19 at halftime, but the Governors returned to outscore them, 19-8, in the third quarter and proceeded to sweep the regular-season series from the Rams. For Cheshire, junior Ella Watson sank four of six free throws and finished with a personal-best 10 points.

Sophomore Tess Givens hit three-pointers in the first and third quarters. Senior Emma Watkinson joined Givens with six points.

Junior Kaylee Clark netted four of her five points in the first quarter. Senior co-captain Ari Perlini, who hit a three-pointer, and senior Rylee Post both had four points.

Junior Sophie Vagts added two points in the first quarter and sophomore Grace Lurz made two free throws during the third.

Wilbur Cross freshman Jaylice Rosario tallied a game-high 18 points, 16 coming after halftime.

On Monday, Cheshire visits Shelton (13-2) to compete at 7 p.m. The Gaelettes won the first meeting, 45-20, on Jan. 10 at CHS.

The Rams visit North Haven for the 15th Southern Connecticut Conference Championship that starts at 10 a.m. CHS is scheduled to perform at 11:47 a.m. Their Unified Team performance is slated for 12:30 p.m.

Boys’ Ice Hockey (7-6-1)

Cheshire visits Northford Ice Pavilion to face host Daniel Hand (10-1) at 5:30 p.m.

Girls’ Ice Hockey (10-3-1)

At Hamden’s Louis Astorino Ice Arena, Amity/North Haven/Cheshire Co-Op hosts Hall/Conard Co-Op (0-13) at 8 p.m.
