CHS Boys' Soccer Plays Rival To Scoreless Draw On Saturday, Girls’ Swim And Dive Seniors Help Rams Extend Dual-Meet Win Streak


On Saturday, Cheshire High School boys’ soccer (1-1-1) settled for a scoreless draw against Lyman Hall (1-1-1). The best scoring chances came in consecutive sequences during the second half! With 20 minutes left, senior goalkeeper/co-captain Matt Pisani came out to make a point-blank save on a shot by Lyman Hall junior Blake Gibertoni. 

A minute later, junior Murphy Malone had a hard shot deflected by LH senior goalkeeper Dan Beverage. In the first half, senior co-captain EJ Gonzalez had a header scooped up by Beverage.

Pisani, who missed the previous game against North Haven due to injury, returned to action and joined Beverage with a shutout.

For Senior Day at CHS, Pisani, Gonzalez, Tim Beecher, Owen Ferguson, Austin and Garrett Goldberg, Nate Houle, and Clement Pez were introduced before the game.

Next Tuesday, the Rams host Hamden (1-1-1) at 5 p.m.

Girls’ Swim and Dive (3-0)

On Senior Night at the Cheshire Community Pool, Cheshire extended their dual-meet win streak to 70, winning 92-83 over Daniel Hand in a virtual meet. Senior tri-captain Sophie Murphy and senior Nora Bergstrom both earned first place in four events, while seniors Bella Tejeda and Emma Glover won three races.

Bergstrom was an individual winner in the 200- (1:57.45) and 500-yard (5:11.67) freestyles. Murphy touched the wall fastest in the 50-yard freestyle (24.44) and 100-yard backstroke (1:00.81). Tejeda captured the 200-yard individual medley (2:15.63) and 100-yard butterfly (1:00.71).

Murphy teamed with Glover, senior tri-captain Mary Barto, and senior Ava Breton to claim the 200-yard medley relay (1:54.47). Bergstrom combined with junior Gabby Sokolik, Glover, and sophomore Julianna Tyler on the winning 200-yard freestyle team (1:46.77).

Bergstrom, Murphy, and Tejeda joined with Barto to win the 400-yard freestyle race in 3:49.61.

Tyler sprinted to win the 100-yard freestyle (57.44). Glover (1:11.28) and Barto (1:11.29) had a tight finish at the wall in the 100-yard breaststroke.

Senior tri-captain Natalie DeMatteo was victorious in the one-meter dive (217.3).

The senior class of Barto, DeMatteo, Murphy, Bergstrom, Breton, Kyleigh Connolly, Glover, Lucy Helene, Kelly Margolies, Tori McCarthy, manager Meghan McDonough, and Tejeda competed on Senior Night. In their first three years, the group has won three class crowns and the 2019 State Open title.

The Rams are scheduled to visit Hamden on Thursday at 3:45 p.m., but it hasn’t been decided yet if that will be a live or virtual meet.
