CHS Boys' Soccer Rallies To Beat Avon In States, Rams Field Hockey Ends Year In Class L First Round, Tao Makes Splash


After a bye in the Class L Tournament, Cheshire High School boys’ soccer (top seed, 13-3-1) was tested on Wednesday, but still proceeded to earn a 6-2 victory over Avon (17th seed, 9-6-3). Avon junior Braden Gilbey scored the opening goal with 23:43 left in the first half, but the Rams responded with a 6-0 run to start the second half.

Senior quad-captain Samir Dishnica set up Cheshire’s opening goals from junior Will Stearns and senior quad-captain Kevi Sulollari. After receiving a pass from junior Elis Sulollari, Dishnica put in the third goal.

Kevi Sulollari netted the next two goals to earn his first hat trick. For his last tally with 16:30 remaining, he netted a header on a free kick by Dishnica.

For Cheshire’s sixth goal, senior quad-captain Colin Brown scored on the personal-best fourth assist from Dishnica.

Gilbey ended the surge by netting a penalty kick with 14:10 remaining, but the Rams didn’t give up another goal and picked up the win. Junior goalkeeper Nolan Kappus posted two saves in the victory.

For the quarterfinals on Friday, the Rams face Notre Dame-West Haven (eighth seed, 13-5-1). The start is being planned for 6 p.m., but the time may be impacted by weather.

ND-WH defeated the Rams, 4-1, on Sept. 13, but Cheshire won 4-0 in the rematch on Oct. 7.

Field Hockey (10th seed, 14-5-1)

In the Class L First Round, Cheshire finished up with a 2-0 loss at Ridgefield (seventh seed, 13-3-1-1). For the Tigers, junior Abby Seal and senior Sara Klosowski scored in the opening half.

During the third quarter, senior Ava Matikowski and senior tri-captain Gigi Ranoldo both took hard drives, but the shots were saved.

Junior goalkeeper Ginny Curello made 11 saves for CHS.

The Rams will graduate a large senior class of Ranoldo, tri-captains Cat Palma and Colby Paul, Julia Bailey, Taya Buntin, Katelyn Daly, Clara Dempsey, Ava Harris, Elise Hurlburt, Kyla Kampf, Matikowski, Autumn Mitchell, Caitlyn Rivera, Emily Rodin, Reilly Whalen, Tamara Zenzola, and manager Mallory DePaolo.

Diving

In the Class L meet at Middletown, senior tri-captain Hannah Tao came in ninth place (330.10).

West Hartford’s Cornerstone Aquatics Center will hold the Class L swim trials on Saturday at 4:30 p.m. Cornerstone will also host the finals on Nov. 15 at 6 p.m.

Thursday’s varsity schedule:

Girls’ Soccer (top seed, 18-0-1)

After a bye in the Class LL First Round, Cheshire plays Darien (16th seed, 8-5-3) at 4 p.m.

Girls’ Volleyball (Second seed, 21-2)

Like the girls’ soccer team, the Rams received a bye in the first round for Class LL. For the second round, CHS pits their 13-match win streak against Westhill (15th seed, 15-7) at 6 p.m.
