CHS Boys' Soccer Sweeps Series With North Haven On Thursday, Reaches SCC Division A Title Game

On Thursday, Cheshire High School boys’ soccer (second seed, 6-3-2) came away victorious in the Southern Connecticut Conference Division A semifinals, beating North Haven (third seed, 4-5-1) 5-2 for the second time this fall.

It took only four minutes and 19 seconds for junior Murphy Malone to put in the opening goal for the Rams, but just a minute and 35 seconds later, North Haven senior Luke Franco scored to tie the game.

Cheshire responded with four straight goals, three before halftime, to take the lead for good. In that run, seniors Austin Goldberg and Clement Pez both recorded their first varsity goals.

Senior co-captain EJ Gonzalez also contributed his first goal of the year, converting on a header off a corner kick by sophomore Samir Dishnica.

With 33:25 remaining in the game, Malone broke free to net his second goal and tie his career-high total. The tally was set up by the personal-best third assist from Dishnica.

Senior co-captain Matt Pisani tallied two saves in the victory.

In the second half, senior Eduardo Cienfuegos de Paz scored North Haven’s second goal.

Cheshire has advanced to the divisional title game on Saturday. The Rams will meet the winner of Friday’s semifinal between Xavier (top seed, 6-3) and Hamden (fifth seed, 2-5-1) at a site and time to be determined.

Friday’s varsity schedule:

Girls’ Soccer (8-3)

After winning their last three games by a margin of 18-0, CHS travels to Middletown for a third meeting with host Mercy (top seed, 10-1) in the SCC Division C final at Xavier. Start time is 4 p.m.

The Tigers won 3-1 in the Oct. 2 opener and then beat Cheshire 2-1 on Oct. 27 at Xavier.

For the SCC Division B title match, top-seeded Cheshire hosts North Haven (third seed, 6-4) at 5 p.m. The Rams beat NH 3-1 on Oct. 9 and Oct. 22.
