In a rivalry meet that came down to the wire on Monday, Cheshire boys’ swim and dive (7-2) fell 94-92 to three-time reigning Southern Connecticut Conference Division I regular-season champion Fairfield Prep at the Cheshire Community Pool. CHS built an 88-84 lead going into the last race, but the Jesuits won the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:25.72) and rallied to earn the road victory.
Senior tri-captain Sam Hanke and junior Justin Finkel both earned three victories for Cheshire. Individually, Hanke won the 200-yard freestyle (1:50.50) and 100-yard backstroke (54.75), while Finkel captured the 100-yard butterfly (53.66) and 500-yard freestyle (4:58.73).
After winning the 500-yard freestyle, Finkel came back in the next race to anchor his 200-yard freestyle relay team to victory in 1:33.83. Freshman Silas Wang, sophomore Vincent Zhu, and Hanke teamed with Finkel on the squad.
Junior Harrison Hua added another first-place finish in the 100-yard freestyle (50.48).
On Tuesday, Cheshire travels to Wesleyan University to face host Xavier at 7 p.m.
Girls’ Basketball (3-12, 1-4 in Quinnipiac Division)
The Rams came up short, 54-33, at Shelton (14-2). The Gaelettes went up 29-15 at halftime and went on to sweep the regular-season series.
For Cheshire, senior Emma Watkinson scored 12 points, seven coming during the fourth quarter. She sank a three-pointer in the second.
Junior Kaylee Clark tallied eight of her nine points, including a pair of three-pointers, in the fourth quarter. Sophomore Grace Lurz drained a three-pointer and added two foul shots in the second. Senior Rylee Post joined Lurz with five points in the game.
Sophomore Emily Grayson added two points in the fourth.
Junior Clarissa Pierre recorded a game-high 17 points.
In a divisional game on Wednesday, CHS visits Madison to face Daniel Hand (13-3, 5-0) at 7 p.m. The Rams seek to avenge a 51-29 loss on Jan. 13.
Boys’ Basketball (1-12, 0-4 in Oronoque Division)
Cheshire fell 59-43 at Xavier (10-3). CHS took a 22-18 lead at the end of the first quarter, but the Falcons outscored them 13-4 in the second and 13-6 in the third.
Senior tri-captain Shaan Vatti fueled Cheshire’s fast start to the game, hitting four of his career-five three-pointers in the opening quarter. He finished with a team-best 17 points.
Sophomore Ben Wable made three three-pointers, while junior Yasha Laskin netted two three-pointers. Junior Cole Feinauer scored five points and senior Dylan Fohl added four. Senior Jason Shumilla had two points in the second quarter.
Led by 26 points from senior Stephen Kohs, the Falcons won the season series with the Rams.
On Wednesday, the Rams aim to snap an 11-game slide in visiting Weaver (2-10) to play at 7 p.m.
