In Housatonic Division rivalry match-ups on Monday, Cheshire High School cross country teams both split against host Shelton and Amity to finish 7-2 (3-1 in Housatonic) in the dual-meet season. CHS boys beat Shelton 25-30, but came up short 24-31 against Amity. Like the boys’ team, Cheshire girls defeated Shelton (24-33), but fell 18-41 to Amity.
In the boys’ race, senior tri-captain Brendan Mellitt finished unbeaten in dual meets, winning his fourth race in 16:43. He earned first place by 23 seconds.
Junior Ryan Farrell (sixth, 17:30) and senior Francis Simpatico (seventh, 17:39) were the next finishers for Cheshire. Despite losing one of his shoes in the first mile, Farrell still beat 23 competitors in the race.
Senior Owen Fiore (13th, 18:19) and sophomore Robert DiNatale (14th, 18:21) rounded out the scorers for Cheshire. Senior tri-captains Charlie Pettit (16th, 18:30) and Parker Arai (22nd, 18:50) capped their dual-meet careers in the top 25. Freshman Colin Grevelding earned 20th place (18:47) for the Rams.
For Cheshire girls, sophomores Olivia Ferraro (fifth, 22:10) and Meghan Georgescu (seventh, 22:37) and senior tri-captain Kristina Benga (ninth, 23:04) made the top 10. Junior Cate Bedard (14th, 24:45) and senior tri-captain Audrey Kiesling (15th, 25:05) finished consecutively in the last scoring positions.
On Saturday, Cheshire teams travel for the Wickham Park Invite in Manchester. High school races start at 9:50 a.m.
Girls’ Soccer (8-1, 4-0 in Housatonic Division)
CHS extended their win streak to seven games, beating North Haven (1-7) 2-1 to sweep the regular-season series. In the first half, Cheshire jumped ahead on goals by junior Julia Hendrick and senior tri-captain Marisa Brough. Sophomore Izzy Dziura assisted Hendrick.
North Haven scored on a free kick in the second half, but Brough’s goal stood up as the eventual game-winner. Junior goalkeeper/tri-captain Seymone Rosenberg earned three saves.
On Friday, the Rams travel to face Guilford (8-1) at 3:45 p.m. CHS seeks to avenge a 1-0 loss on Sept. 17.
Girls’ Volleyball (9-1, 4-0 in Hammonasset Division)
Cheshire picked up their third straight win, beating host Amity (6-4) 3-1 (25-17, 25-15, 22-25, 25-22) for the second time this fall. Senior Julia Bartiet tallied personal-best totals for aces (10) and digs (nine), adding nine kills. Senior co-captain Lindsey Abramson compiled 14 kills, five aces, two blocks, and two digs.
Senior Emma Watkinson contributed 23 assists, four digs, two kills, and a block. Senior co-captain Ari Perlini finished with 12 digs and an ace.
On Thursday, the Rams visit Shelton (9-2) to compete at 6 p.m. CHS beat the Gaelettes 3-0 on Sept. 25.
