CHS Girls' Basketball Rallies For Second Straight Win On Friday, Cheshire Boys Defeat Hand In The Pool

On Friday, Cheshire High School girls’ basketball (5-14, 2-6 in Quinnipiac Division) mounted a winning rally for the second game in a row, coming from behind to earn a 40-33 victory over Branford (7-13). CHS trailed 20-18 at halftime, but outscored the Hornets 22-13 from there to pick up a split of the season series and qualify for the Class LL Tournament.

Junior Kaylee Clark posted 16 points, 11 coming after halftime. She made two three-pointers.

Sophomore Grace Lurz hit a pair of three-pointers in the opening half. Juniors Ella Watson and Jordan DeMatteo both had five points.

Senior Ari Perlini contributed four points in the fourth quarter, while senior Emma Watkinson and sophomore Tess Givens scored two points each in the first half.

For Branford, junior Gabby Lucertini joined Clark with a game-high 16 points.

This Monday, CHS hosts North Haven in the regular-season finale at 6 p.m. In a pre-game ceremony, Perlini (co-captain), Toni Wetmore (co-captain), Rylee Post, and Watkinson will be introduced on Senior Night.

Boys’ Swim and Dive (9-3)

At Cheshire Community Pool, the Rams won 96-74 over Daniel Hand. Senior Sam Hanke captured the 100-yard freestyle (49.81) and 100-yard backstroke (55.75). He also teamed with sophomore Vincent Zhu, junior Hayden Curello, and junior Harrison Hua to win the 200-yard medley relay (1:45.55).

Sophomore Anmol Sapru won the 50-yard freestyle (24.19) and 100-yard breaststroke (1:11.27). Sophomore Ed Chen earned first place in the 100-yard butterfly (59.14) and combined with freshmen Silas Wang and Alex Fang and Zhu on the winning 200-yard freestyle relay team (1:39.44).

From the junior class, Justin Finkel was victorious in the 200-yard freestyle (1:52.39) and Noah Duncan claimed the one-meter dive (228.30).

To end the regular season on Feb. 25, Cheshire hosts Shelton at 7 p.m. Seniors James Bennett (tri-captain), Nick Brunetti (tri-captain), Hanke (tri-captain), Donald Demollari, Paul DeSena, Gavin Hummel, and Evan Missakian will be recognized before the meet.

Saturday’s varsity schedule:

Wrestling

The Rams visit Middletown for the Southern Connecticut Conference Championship at Mercy. Start time is 9 a.m.

Indoor Track and Field

Cheshire boys and girls travel to New Haven’s Floyd Little Athletic Center for the Class L Championship at 10 a.m.

Ice Hockey (8-6-2)

CHS heads to West Haven’s Bennett Rink to face host Amity (3-10-2) at 3 p.m.

Boys’ Basketball (2-14, 1-5 in Oronoque Division)

In the final home game, Cheshire plays Guilford (8-8) at 6 p.m. Prior to the game, players Alec Frione (tri-captain), Colby Griffin (tri-captain), Shaan Vatti (tri-captain), Jackson Cohen, Dylan Fohl, Jack Hickey, Jarred Miller, and Jason Shumilla, as well as cheerleader Madison Fletcher, will be honored on Senior Night.

On Jan. 21, Guilford won 68-58 over visiting CHS.
