CHS Girls Extend Win Streaks In Fall Sports

On Friday, Cheshire High School girls’ soccer stayed undefeated (8-0) with a 3-1 victory at Foran (4-3) in Milford. Senior tri-captains Anna Hurlbut and Gabby Tirado both netted goals in the first half.

Foran cut the deficit to 2-1, but freshman Abby Sink scored the final goal. Junior Stella Tessier and sophomore Ava Sink joined Tirado with assists.

Junior goalkeeper Sophie Bates finished with five saves.

On Monday, the Rams have a rematch with Amity (1-6-1) at 6 p.m. Back in the Sept. 9 opener, Cheshire rallied to win 2-1 in Woodbridge.

Girls’ Volleyball (8-1)

Cheshire jumped out to a 2-0 lead and then held on to win 3-2 (25-4, 25-15, 12-25, 21-25, 15-8) over Branford (4-5). The Rams extended their win streak to five matches.

Senior tri-captain Avery Mola posted 13 kills, eight aces (personal high), and two digs. Senior Mimi Perlini (14) and senior tri-captain Sophia Surato (10) combined for 24 assists.

Senior Alex Lucas tallied six kills and four digs.

On Saturday, Cheshire travels to Hebron to play RHAM (6-1) at 11 a.m.

Girls’ Swim and Dive (6-0)

At Foran in Milford, the Rams earned their 92nd consecutive dual-meet victory, 103-72, against Jonathan Law. In individual races, senior tri-captain Avery Potyrala won the 200-yard freestyle (1:58.50) and 100-yard butterfly (1:01.44), while sophomore Natalia Gajecki was victorious in the 200-yard individual medley (2:16.88) and 100-yard freestyle (57.15).

Potyrala teamed with senior tri-captain Julianna Tyler and seniors Emma Grove and Emily Rivera on the winning 200-yard freestyle relay team (1:50.57). Gajecki combined with sophomore Carly Cahill, senior Allyson Leighton, and sophomore Julia Tejeda to post the best time in the 400-yard freestyle race (4:06.54).

Sophomore Lauren Waitkus, Rivera, junior Morgan McDonough, and Cahill kicked off by winning the 200-yard medley relay (2:04.16). Senior tri-captain Hannah Tao (one-meter dive, 200.10), senior Vanessa Squillante (50-yard freestyle, 27.53), Tejeda (500-yard freestyle, 5:32.08), Cahill (100-yard backstroke, 1:05.85), and freshman Katie Pagliaro (100-yard breaststroke, 1:20.02) also led the way in events.

On Monday at the Cheshire Community Pool, Cheshire hosts rival Greenwich (5-1) and Ridgefield at 7 p.m.
