CHS Girls' Swim And Dive Pushes Win Streak To 63 On Tuesday, Rams Field Hockey Earns Road Win Over Simsbury

On Tuesday, Cheshire High School girls’ swim and dive (8-0) defeated North Haven 94-86 to extend their dual-meet win streak to 63. Junior Sophie Murphy won three races and senior Julia Stevens was victorious in two events.

Individually, Murphy sprinted to victories in the 50- (24.67) and 100-yard (53.29) freestyles. She also anchored the 200-yard medley relay team to a first-place finish in 1:55.85. Senior co-captain Sarah Chen and juniors Mary Barto and Bella Tejeda joined Murphy on the relay.

Stevens captured the 200-yard individual medley (2:12.73) and 500-yard freestyle (5:12.65). Junior Nora Bergstrom (200-yard freestyle, 1:58.59) and senior co-captain Jillian Stevens (100-yard backstroke, 1:01.19) also touched the wall first individually.

Freshman Avery Potyrala, junior Emma Glover, senior Tori Newton, and freshman Julianna Tyler teamed to win the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:46.95). In the 1-meter dive, junior Natalie DeMatteo posted a career-best score (239.70) to place second to North Haven senior Ava Santacroce (243.60). DeMatteo's score ranks ninth in CHS history for six dives.

North Haven senior Angela Gambardella took first place in the 100-yard butterfly (1:00.50) and 100-yard breaststroke (1:06.17). She also combined with junior Maddie Bergin, sophomore Taya Laborde, and junior Riley Jooss to capture the 400-yard freestyle (3:51.17).

On Friday, Cheshire travels to Shelton to compete at Shelton Community Center Pool. Start time is 3:45 p.m.

Field Hockey (5-4)

Cheshire jumped ahead 2-0 and went on to win 2-1 at Simsbury (6-4). Just 3:12 into the game, senior co-captain Kiley Jackson scored to put CHS up 1-0.

With 15:12 remaining, junior Sophie Vagts recorded the second goal on a pass from sophomore Lauren Houle. Simsbury freshman Charlotte Iler put in a goal with 7:32 remaining, but the Rams held on for the road win. 

Senior goalkeeper Ava Pulisciano made a save in the victory.

On Friday, Cheshire visits North Haven (1-10) to play at 3:45 p.m.
