To open the season on Saturday, Cheshire High School ice hockey saw momentum go against them in a 3-1 loss to Amity (1-1) at Louis Astorino Ice Arena in Hamden. With 9:04 left in the second period, the Rams jumped ahead when senior co-captain Niklas Vasiljevs won a face-off and then assisted on the first varsity goal by junior Damon Zurolo, but the Spartans capitalized on a pair of roughing penalties to rally with three goals in the third.
After the Rams were penalized with 19 seconds left in the second period, Amity scored on the power play just 38 seconds into the third. After receiving a pass from freshman Niko Tournas, sophomore David Brown recorded the tying goal.
In what would be the eventual game-winner with 7:31 left, senior Thomas Schittina scored another power-play goal to put Amity up 2-1. After Cheshire pulled junior goalkeeper Amaan Chaudhry for an extra skater with just over a minute left, senior Justin Miller netted the final goal on an empty net.
Chaudhry made 13 saves in his first start. The Rams led 34-16 in shots, but Amity sophomore goalkeeper Brendan Smith picked up 33 saves.
On Monday, the Rams look to rebound against host North Haven (2-0) at Northford Ice Pavilion. Puck drop is scheduled for 3:15 p.m.
