Due to concerns over COVID-19 or Coronavirus, Cheshire High School has had the start of the spring sports season pushed back. Under a directive from the state of Connecticut, Cheshire Public Schools will be closed for the next two weeks.
According to Athletic Directive Steve Trifone, teams could start practice as early as Monday, March 30.
“The CIAC (Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference) is going to reconvene on Wednesday, March 18, and they will decide on a timetable for spring sports,” stated Trifone. “With the school grounds closed, we don’t want kids coming to gather and instead stay home right now.”
While being advised to not work out in groups, Trifone adds that athletes should practice good hygiene and take care of themselves at home.
Pre-season practice is required before official contests can begin. Depending on the upcoming schedule, Trifone says that regular season contest could start between mid April or maybe early May.
“I’ll take a shortened season instead of a complete loss. I’d like to see sports as long as we are out of the woods for what is going on right now,” explained Trifone. “I hope that we don’t have to deal with anything like this (health issue) again in the future.”
