Cheshire Boys' Basketball Snaps Slide On The Road, Hurlbut Shines On The Court, Wrestlers Compete On Senior Night


On Tuesday, Cheshire High School boys’ basketball (4-9) ended a four-game skid with a 60-49 win at Branford (2-9). CHS swept the series in the regular season.

CHS built a 26-23 advantage at halftime. Junior Connor Hayes provided a spark in the second quarter, netting all of his 10 points on three three-pointers and a free throw.

The Rams gained separation by outscoring Branford, 34-26, in the second half. Sophomore Bennett Crerar paced Cheshire with 13 points, 11 coming after halftime.

After missing four games, senior tri-captain Jack Markarian returned to the lineup and netted nine points. Junior tri-captain Matt Jeffery posted eight points.

Senior Adrian Ali hit two three-pointers in the third quarter. Sophomore Dom Parete contributed six points and earned a career-high total in the process.

Sophomore Jackson Enders had four points, while senior tri-captain Drew Vagts and junior Ryan Grove supplied two points each.

For Branford, juniors Nathan Florio and Sowatei-Jelani Lomotey both scored 12 points.

On Friday, the Rams host North Haven (6-7) at 7 p.m. In the first meeting on Dec. 23 at NH, Cheshire outlasted their rival to win 67-64 in double overtime.

Girls’ Basketball (3-11)

CHS came up short 61-41 at Hillhouse (5-7) in New Haven.

The teams traded baskets at the outset. Senior quad-captain Anna Hurlbut netted five points early, including a layup to put Cheshire up 8-6, but the Academics went on a 10-0 run to take the lead for good.

Hillhouse senior Nielle Reaves posted nine of her game-high 28 points in opening quarter. She ended the frame with a running three-pointer to put the Academics up 22-12.

Hillhouse capitalized on offensive rebounding and long-distance shooting. The Academics went up 36-21 at halftime and went on to sweep regular-season series with CHS.

Hurlbut finished with a personal-high 16 points, nine of which came in the first half. Senior quad-captain Mimi Perlini made two three-pointers among her eight points.

Junior quad-captain Ella Kulas and sophomore Sydney Hale tallied five and four points, respectively. Sophomore Allie Grove earned three points.

Senior Gabby Tirado and freshman Molly Fleming had two points each in the first half. Freshman Andrea Gogal also made a foul shot for the Rams.

On Friday, Cheshire takes a road trip to North Haven (10-4) for a rematch at 6 p.m. On Dec. 23, NH won 52-35 at CHS.

Wrestling (0-9)

The Rams fell 60-18 to Branford in the final home meet. Sophomore Jake Tierney (138 pounds) and seniors Connor Nash (145) and Rome Smith (160) won by pin.

Smith, Nash, and Titus Barsczewski competed on Senior Night.

On Saturday at 9 a.m., the Rams compete in the Doc Meyers Invitational at Rocky Hill.

Cheshire boys and girls visit New Haven’s Floyd Little Athletic Center for the Southern Connecticut Conference East Divisional Championship at 5 p.m.

Boys’ Ice Hockey (4-5)

CHS travels to Northford Ice Pavilion to face host Daniel Hand (3-5) at 8:30 p.m.
