Cheshire Boys' Soccer Knocks Off Unbeaten Guilford, Girls' V-Ball Team Comes Up Short On The Road

In a rivalry match-up on Saturday night, Cheshire High School boys’ soccer (5-2) pulled out a 2-1 victory over previously unbeaten Guilford (6-1-1).

CHS struck first just 2:58 into the game. Senior quad-captain Colin Brown controlled ball around the 40-yard line and sprinted down to shoot the ball into the net.

The Rams had the possession advantage in the contest, however the play of senior goalkeeper Justin Hess (seven saves) kept Guilford within striking distance.

The Grizzlies drew even on a goal by senior Tyler Yerkes with 32:58 left, but CHS returned to get the game-winner with 9:38 remaining. On a corner kick, junior Elis Sulollari precisely booted the ball toward the left post where senior Jack Markarian sent a header off Hess’ hand into the upper right corner.

Junior Nolan Kappus, who made two saves, picked up the victory in net.

On Monday, CHS visits Milford to play Foran (4-3) at 5:30 p.m. On Sept. 10, Cheshire opened the season with a 3-1 victory over the Lions.

Girls’ Volleyball (8-2)

After earning a 3-2 victory last night over Branford, the Rams saw their five-match win streak come to a close today in a 3-1 loss (14-25, 14-25, 25-21, 18-25) at RHAM (8-1) in Hebron. Senior tri-captains Avery Mola (eight kills, five digs) and Sophia Surato (13 assists, three digs, two aces) played key roles for CHS.

On Monday, Cheshire travels to Middletown for a rematch with Mercy (7-2) at 5:30 p.m. In the Sept. 8 opener, CHS won 3-1 against the Tigers.
