Rams Football Clamps Down On Hillhouse, Earns Shutout In New Haven

On Friday night, Cheshire High School football flexed their defensive muscles at Bowen Field in New Haven. Sparked by a season-high four interceptions, the Rams posted a 30-0 shutout of Hillhouse (0-2) and improved to 2-0 on the season.

Special teams set up the first touchdown in the opening quarter. After the Rams forced the Academics into a fourth down on the opening drive, sophomore Taylor Rochford blocked a punt and CHS took over at the 2-yard line. Two plays later, junior Jeffery Gonzalez ran for a 1-yard touchdown to put Cheshire up 7-0.

In the second quarter, the Rams extended their lead on a 30-yard field goal by senior Micah Galloza.

Defensively in the second, senior co-captain Michael Simeone and junior Lucas Chymbor made her first interceptions for the Rams. After Simeone’s pick, Hillhouse took the ball back with an interception on the next drive.

The Academics threatened offensively at the end of the first half, but Chymbor came down with his interception in the end zone.

Following his big defensive play, Chymbor returned in the third quarter to catch his first touchdown on a 59-yard pass from junior quarterback Matt Jeffery. The point after touchdown attempt was blocked, so the Rams led 16-0.

On the next drive, senior Ben Thompson caught a tipped pass and ran back the interception for his first touchdown with 8:39 left in the third quarter.

To cap the scoring, Chymbor caught his second touchdown with 5 minutes remaining in the third.
