Rams Football Uses Running Game And Stingy Defense To Win Friday's Opener


On Friday night, Cheshire High School football opened the season with a dominant performance in a 35-7 victory over New Milford. CHS jumped ahead 21-0 at halftime and extended the lead to 35-0 before giving up a touchdown in the fourth quarter.

Defensively, the Rams won the turnover battle (3-0). New Milford took possession to start the game, but on the first play from scrimmage, CHS forced a fumble and senior Brett Rochford fell on the ball.

Cheshire scored on the ensuing drive. On the NM 7-yard line, junior Jeffery Gonzalez caught a swing pass and made a juke move to get into the end zone with 9:49 remaining in the first quarter.

After the Rams forced the Green Wave to punt on the next drive, CHS took a 14-0 lead on a 3-yard touchdown run by senior Connor Moran with 3:31 left in the opening quarter.

The Cheshire defense picked up two turnovers in the second. When the Green Wave had an errant snap, junior Adam Vernon recovered the ball at the NM 39-yard line.

With 5:14 remaining in the second, Gonzalez powered for a 4-yard touchdown run to put the Rams up 21-0.

Jeffery earned the third turnover of the first half, making his first interception at the end of the second quarter. He returned to run for a 31-yard touchdown with 9:29 left in the third.

In the fourth quarter, Vernon returned a punt to the NM 29-yard line. The play helped set up Gonzalez to earn his career-high third touchdown on a 5-yard blast with 10:55 left.

The Green Wave ended the shutout with 6:05 remaining, as sophomore Darnell Cicero-Bronson ran for a 28-yard touchdown.

Next Friday, Cheshire travels to New Haven’s Bowen Field to face Hillhouse (0-1) at 6 p.m.
